‘There was a lot ofhype about the Glens but we sure spoiled the party’

And rightly so for it had been 26 years in the making. The Bannsiders went into the game with many expecting them just to make up the numbers as Glentoran went for the ‘Clean Sweep’. But the ‘Mighty Quinn’ had other ideas.

“There was a lot of hype about them before the game with talk of banners and t-shirts being made up with the four trophies on them, but we used it as motivation,” recalled the former Bannsiders boss.

“We went into the game in with the utmost confidence and it showed on the pitch. From one to eleven the guys were superb and it was epitomised by our captain and leader Pat McAllister.

“Who will forget his tackle in the last few minutes? He was hobbling around on one leg but still he made sure he won the tackle.”

The scenes in Coleraine both before and after the game will live long with Quinn.

“The fans gave us an amazing send off on the day, but the scenes when we arrived home were unbelivable,” said Marty.

“The station was a sea of blue and white and I think everyone was carried off the bus on the fans’ shoulders. It was a truly amazing sight.

“We ended up in the Salmon Leap for our post match meal and celebration and what a party it was!

“It is up there as one of the best nights of my life.

“That night and the night after I won the league with Cliftonville were memorable to say the least.

“It’s nice to sit back at the end of your career and think about them.

“They are special times which seem like they were only yesterday.”
