Thirds put up good show

Glenavon Thirds 0 Linfield Rangers 1

GLENAVON took on a very strong Linfield side which included a large contingent of players who normally ply their trade with the reserve side.

This fact didn’t faze the Lurgan lads as they took the game to their counterparts from the kick off and were unfortunate not to take an early lead.

A superb turn and shot from Robbie McDaid came off the inside of the post while Rhys Marshall headed just over when well placed. Rhys also had the Linfield keeper scrambling when a well struck free kick scraped the bar.

As the half went on Linfield got into their stride and they too struck a post. Marty Marron in the Glenavon goal also had to be at his best when tipping over a fierce Linfield drive.

The second period started with Linfield in the ascendancy and again Marty Marron had to be at his best on two more occasions.

Fifteen minutes into the half and Linfield got the breakthrough when their central defender did well to head home from a corner. Glenavon never gave up though and worked hard to force an equalizer.

A number of free kicks were won around the penalty area but nothing was converted and Robbie McDaid had a good effort well saved.

In the end Linfield came out on top, Glenavon however can take heart from pushing such a strong side and hopefully will take the same effort into this weekends game at 11am at Seaview against Newington.
