Thistle put a sting in Dromore’s tails

IVEAGH Thistle made the short trip to Dromore on the back of a few excellent performances but expecting, from previous encounters, that this wasn’t going to be an easy task.

The first five minutes saw Thistle set out their attack when a well-timed tackle by Gallagher found Kearns and good passing between Carroll and Donnelly down the left wing nearly resulted in a goal with a Dromore defender clearing for a corner. Minutes later an identical move produced a goal for Donnelly to slot it in at the back post. The consistent hard work paid off as Carroll scored two and Donnelly scored another to make the score line 4-0.

A long distance lob by McCavitt nearly had the Dromore keeper in trouble, however it was well saved. Then a rare Dromore attack put their striker one-on-one with Thistle keeper Hunter, sliding out just in time to smother the ball. A quick break saw Carroll the provider again as he played in Kearns who expertly finished with an unstoppable shot, which along with all his hard work earned him “man of the match”. Half time was easily summed with Carroll scoring twice and setting up 3.

The second half started a little slower until Donnelly won a penalty, taken by McCavitt, which was coolly saved by a strong Dromore keeper. Chances seemed in abundance as a Gallagher overhead kick and a crossbar splitting left-footed volley from Donnelly didn’t find the back of the net. Yet again a sturdy defence gave nothing away as Dromore tried to get into the game.

McCavitt scored the sixth goal of the match for Thistle after a super turn from Gallagher set him up to blast it past the keeper. A curling cross from Russell had Dromore in trouble again, although it proved to be a fruitless attempt as seconds later Russell had to clear in defense.
