Three and easy for Simpson’s men

Newbuildings United cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win over Mountjoy, in the League Cup, on Saturday.

The home side’s dominance was so great that their keeper Corey Wilson did not have a single shot to save during the entire 90 minutes.

In truth, United could and should have won by a lot more only for some poor finishing and a couple of fine saves from the visitors keeper.

The game started with the home side controlling the play but unable to find the killer pass in the final third as Mountjoy defended in numbers.

Gary Simpson’s side did get the breakthrough following good play down the right by Curry, the ball found Ricky Lee Dougherty inside the box with space and he swept the ball home from 10 yards out.

Newbuildings continued to press and they netted their second shortly before half-time when the ball was squared to Wallace 20 yards out, his first time hit flew into the top corner of the net giving the away keeper no chance.

The second half saw more of the same with the Waterside men peppering the visitor’s goal.

Glenn saw a header go just over, a Curry angled drive saw the Mountjoy keeper save well and he was also equal to efforts from Wallace and Lynch.

The home side deservedly got their third when Dougherty broke into the box and was impeded just as he was about to shot, the ref had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and after dusting himself down the Donemana man fired home the resulting spot-kick and in the process notching up his 23rd goal of the season.

With the points in the bag now this allowed manager Simpson to make some changes and in the process introduce 16-year-old Christopher Riddles for his first team debut.

Meanwhile the Reserves continued their good start to the season with a 2-2 draw at Dungiven Reserves. Mark Olphert and Gregory McIvor were on target for them.

This weekend the first team travel to play Groomsport in the first round of the Intermediate Cup, while the Reserves have no game.
