Tigers tails up after big win

Banbridge Town 0

Dungannon Tigers 7

Dungannon Tigers enjoyed a comfortable passage to Round 3 of the Ivan Marshall Cup with a thumping 7-0 win away to Banbridge Town Reserves.

The youthful home side were up against it and there job was made even harder when they found themselves 2-0 down after only 5 minutes. A pin point pass from a free kick by Nathan Martin found centre back Graham Jarvis ghosting in and he planted a bullet header past the keeper at his near post.

Soon afterwards Sean Anthony Burns helped himself to a goal with a well taken finish.

Burns, playing up front in place of the unavailable Gareth Devlin, doubled his tally for the day when he rounded the keeper and fired home from an acute angle to make it 3-0.

Full back Daniel Bleeks was getting forward to support the hard working Liam O’Neill as Jarvis, Stringer and Brennan marshalled the defence.

Nathan Martin and Eoin Donnelly were completely dominant in centre field and Toner and Burns were causing countless problems for the youthful Banbridge defence.

Toner made it 4-0 before the referee blew the whistle for half-time and some much needed respite for the home side.

The second half continued in much the same vein as the first and Sean Anthony Burns completed his first hat trick for the Tigers after being put through by Toner.

The visitors then replaced Burns with top scorer Brian Somerville who wasn’t on the pitch very long before he got in on the scoring act to make it 6-0.

Full back Bleeks completed the rout with a rasping drive from 30 yards.

Dungannon Rovers lost by 4-0 against last year’s league winners St Marys of Portadown.

Both sides got the ball down and passed it from the start to make for good viewing by the spectators.

St Marys took the lead on 10 minutes when a mistake in the Rovers defence allowed the ball to be crossed in from the left and the onrushing St Marys midfielder made no mistake.

Rovers came into the game more and the home keeper made a fantastic diving save to his left to keep out Filipe Cabral’s effort.

The Dungannon men were keeping St Marys chances to a minimum and were well in the game keeping the ball well.

Rovers forced a few corners in the half and from one of these Marty Daly was unlucky to not get something on the ball when it fell invitingly inside the 6 yard box.

St Marys came out stronger in the second half and within 10 minutes were 2-0 up when from a corner the St Marys midfielder scored his second of the game with a back post unmarked header.

As the half went on the Rovers pushed more men forward in the hope of getting a goal back but were caught on the break and the St Marys player got his hat trick.

The Rovers then had there best chance of the half but Carlos Alexandres effort just dipped over the bar.

With a couple of minutes to go the same St Marys midfielder scored his teams and his own fourth goal of the game.

Kevin Grimley got the goal for the Rovers but they were unable to force a leveller before full time.

The Reserves play at home against Lurgan Thistle Reserves.

Fivemiletown United 4 Lisanally Rangers 1

Fivemiletown hosted Lisanally Rangers in what was only their second league game of the season and with the strongest panel available so far, posted their opening points after a competent and clinical display to dispatch the visitors from Armagh.

It took this game 30 mins before a pattern was really established with both teams seeming nervy.

Stevie Erskine opened the scoring from a very tight angle after 10 minutes after evading a couple of challenges.

The lead was to be short lived. Rangers levelling 3 minutes later. A big defender finding himself unmarked at a corner, drove a powerful header into the net.

The game ebbed and flowed with both teams creating openings. Matty Callaghan rose highest at a corner to watch his header inch over.

It was on the half hour when Dale Noble weaved his way into the box before stroking the ball home to inch the Town in front.

Simon Robb broke down the right and could only watch as his shot was well saved by the visiting netminder.

Stevie Erskine had strong claims for a penalty turned down after being upended in the box, but the ref waved away his appeals.

Lisanally closed the half with intent. Dessie Gilmour having to clear off the line and Cameron Crawford moments later saving well to preserve the lead.

Rangers started the second half as they finished the first. Ivor Johnston this having to clear off the line. But that was as good as it got for Rangers.

On 62 minutes Johnston stabbed home from a Niall Murphy free to put daylight between the teams.

Addy Williamson entered the fray after an injury to Adam Black and the game cranked up a level.

Williamson played in Noble on 68 who coolly clipped home to grab his brace.

Overall a pleasing performance. Johnston was strong at CH and the debut of Josh Lee, recently signed from Maguiresbridge, at LB got better as he grew into the game.

Matty Callaghan in the middle was a real driving force and the return of aging campaigner Dessie Gilmour helped the youngsters during the tough spells. With Noble and Erskine up front proving a potent combination.

Next week Fivemiletown host Shankill United from the Amateur league Premier division in the opening round of the Irish Cup.
