Title looks set to go to the wire

Whatever the English Premier League can do, so can the Hutchinson Tiles League. Its also heading for it’s closest finish ever with one fixture of the league season remaining.

Mountview host FC Macosquin in that fixture and if they pick up the three points it will see them join Glebe Rangers Old Boys at the top, where a play-off between the sides will determine the winner of this years league. Glebe Rangers secured their place in a possible play off with a hard fought victory away to West Bann Athletic.

The Old Boys visited West Bann as they completed their league programme for the season. With player-boss Bellingham suspended Paul Gaston stepped in at centre-half whilst Paul Holmes returned after last week’s festivities to replace Ricky Blair on the right flank. I

n a tight first half Glebe took the lead when Les Nicholl soared highest to meet a Holmes corner. As per usual West Bann were full of running with Pancott and Robinson prominent and they deservedly drew level when a wickedly curling corner from Jason Holmes was deflected into his own net by the unfortunate McCracken.

With three points a necessity the Old Boys hit back just on half-time when Holmes crossed and amid confusion in the home defence, Steele shot home.

The second half saw the Old Boys press from the start although clear-cut chances were at a premium. Gradually West Bann came back into the game and Allen was called into action on a number of occasions, with one diving save worthy of particular mention.

Glebe were denied a penalty when Jones appeared to impeded Elder but ref Scott waved play on. As the game drew to a close there was one last scare for the Old Boys when the homesters broke quickly but again Allen came to the rescue to leave the final score two-one to the away team.
