Top-four finish should be in our sights, says Wharry

Larne’s William Wharry is currently playing some of the best football of his career and he is really enjoying it. And the big defender believes there’s no reason why Larne can’t push for a top-four finish.

“I am happy with my form at the minute and a big part of that is down to the influence of Davy McAlinden and his backroom team.

“Davy and Paddy Byrne really impressed me and the addition of Mark Carlisle has really helped as well,” said the centre-back. “Without doubt, the current training is the best I have done and there is a great buzz about the place.

“A lot of the players like myself are also doing extra fitness sessions on their own and I think this is down to everyone being motivated to do well. Some of the U18 players are also joining us at training and it is great to see the future stars of the club are getting involved with the first team and they are keeping us on our toes.”

Wharry has also been impressed with the new faces that have arrived at the club in the January window.

“The manager has brought in quality all over the park and I think they are all shrewd signings. It was great to see Chris Keenan coming back. I have been playing alonsgide him since we were youngsters and I believe he is really motivated since he resigned.

“Having players like Jamie Mitchell and Stuart Scott in midfield helps take the pressure off the back line and we can also play the ball through them instead of just hoofing it up the pitch.

“At the back I have a great understanding with Darren McNamee and along with Ross Black and Craig Todd we have a solid back line.”

As for the remainder of the season Wharry is optimistic. “Next up we travel to Bangor in the Intermediate Cup. I know it will be tough but we don’t fear them and on our day we can beat anyone in our division.

Carrick are currently top of the league and we beat them comfortably last time. We are sixth in the table and I know some of the teams above us have played less games, but there is no reason we shouldn’t be pushing for a top four.”
