A week before the Premier Intermediate League gets underway, Town travel to take on PSNI in the NIFL League Cup first round at Newforge Lane (kick-off 3pm).

Town’s opponents, of course, were promoted to the NIFL Championship last season and that is the Promised Land to which King is hoping to lead his Town subjects.

“If we want to push forward, this is the level we have to get to,” said King. “PSNI are a team who got out of our division last season so every one of our players has to get up to that level.”

Town go into the game off the back of an encouraging pre-season and most recently a 3-2 victory over Premiership side Ballymena United. However, PSNI are also a team on form.

“I got somebody to watch their game last Saturday,” King said. “They beat Bangor 4-2 and apparently were absolutely outstanding.

“We know we’re going to have to be at the top of our game but we’ll give it a go.The lads are all raring to go. They’ve all got minutes on the pitch during a good pre-season and have done well.”
