Town go down fighting ‘Ard

IT took Niall Currie’s Ards a full 70 minutes to break down a resolute Banbridge Town.

Ronnie Haughey’s Town kept Ards at bay with a hard working display, denying Ards space in the final third, with chances few and far between for Currie’s side.

Despite Ards dominating possession for the majority of the game the best chance previous to the goal fell to Town’s Conor Downey, who headed over from six yards at the tail end of the first half.

Ards finally turned their territory into a lead in the 70thminute when substitute Nathan McConnell drilled a half-volley into the bottom corner of the net from 16 yards, much to the relief of the Ards support at Dixon Park.

Ards doubled their lead a minute later when Mark Picking’s shot from 12 yards hit the inside of the post and into the net.

Ross Arthurs and Aaron McKee missed chances to extend Ards’ lead in the last ten minutes, with the inform Arthurs missing a header from inside the six yard box after an accurate cross from Nathan McConnell.

McConnell and Picking’s goals gave Ards a deserved, if hard fought victory, which keeps their slim title hopes alive.
