Trimble marks return with winner for Thirds

Moneyslane Thirds beat Saintfield Seconds 2-1 last weekend.

From the off, Moneyslane were knocking the ball about very well with great composure. Dean Smyth picked the ball up from the edge of the box and struck a shot bound for the top corner but the keeper reacted well and clawed it away. The Saints pushed back into the game and from a corner, a defensive mix up with several Slane players allowed the home side to take the lead.

This stunned the Legends and it took a while for them to get a grip of the game. Once they regrouped, they dug deep, regained their confidence and pushed forward for the rest of the game. Joe Porter lobbed the ball into the box, Deano jumped like he was on a trampoline to flick it on to Hammy, who controlled and slotted into the bottom corner from a tight angle.

The second half began with the introduction of Darren Trimble, who has returned after a long injury. Both teams went for the win and were creating chances but none could be converted until Slane pumped the ball up to Trimble.

With great skill, he outfoxed his marker, gained a yard and drilled his shot low past the keeper. The Saints responded well and put Moneyslane under immense pressure. Slane counter-attacked on the break and were unlucky not to get a third when a last ditch block by a defender denied Trimble.

Man of the match was John Trimble. On his return he didn’t put a foot wrong.

SLANE: Andy Boyd, Ross Kerr, Adam Gibson, Robin Butler, John Trimble, Willy Davison, Joe Porter, Paul English, Deane Smyth, Gary Hanna, Gareth Hamilton, Sammy Watts, Darren Trimble, Clive Hamilton.
