Two goal Martyn helps secure top six finish

Ciaran Martyn scored twice in the second half to kill off Coleraine and secure the three points for Gary Hamilton’s side.

Only a super save from Coleraine keeper Ferry denied Martyn from taking home the match ball, his one handed stop wiping away the chance of a hat-trick.

After a rather low key opening ten minutes the first chance fell to Coleraine with Paul Owens delivering a teasing cross which just beat the lunge of David McDaid in front of goal.

Glenavon had a big shout for a penalty when Stephen Douglas appeared to control the ball with his arm but referee Mervyn Smyth waved play on.

The ref was called upon on 15 minutes to produce a red card, Coleraine down to ten men after Gary Browne made a rash challenge on William Murphy.

For the next 15 minutes it was poor stuff from both sides with neither team able to retain possession.

Glenavon had to wait until the 35th minute before testing the Coleraine keeper, Brian McCaul’s corner falling to Mark Patton but his half volley was easily gathered.

After such a dull opening 44 minutes David Rainey lifted the home fans with a trademark strike, the ball broke to him at the edge of the box following a McCaul corner and his shot flew into the net like an arrow.

Coleraine were back in the game on 57 minutes when Joe McNeill passed to Adam Mullan who took the ball in his stride before drilling past James McGrath.

However, Glenavon produced the perfect response, two minutes later they were ahead again when Rainey passed to Patton who slipped the ball into the path of Ciaran Martyn and he found the able to beat Ferry from 18 yards out.

Martyn was close to a second soon after after a sweeping move but Ferry made a fine one handed save.

The Glenavon midfielder ensured sixth spot for the Lurgan Blues with a superb scissors kick on 78 minutes and the ball flew past the dive of Ferry.

Sub Tiarnan Mulvenna whipped a snapshot inches wide as Glenavon continued to press right to the end.

Next up for Glenavon is a trip to Stangmore Park to face Warrenpoint on Tuesday night.
