U10s beaten in a physical encounter

Rathfriland got off to a bad start and were 3-0 down in the first period and it could have been a lot worse only for Jack McGinn in goals who pulled off a couple of great saves.

In the second period Rathfriland started to take control of the midfield with Alex McKee starting to show some great skill down the left wing and he created some good chances but Rathfriland were unable to convert them.

James Walsh and Drew McKnight had solid performance’s up front for Rathfriland as they tried to break the Killowen defence. Shane Haughey then started to stamp his authority on the game with a number of amazing runs from midfield and was rewarded with his first goal of the game to make it 3-1.

Rathfriland started to put the Killowen goal under a lot of pressure and only for their keeper making a number of outstanding saves Rathfriland would have drawn level. Towards the end of this period Killowen went on to score a 4th goal to make it 4-1.

In the third period Rathfriland were determined to give Killowen a run for their money with Aaron Baxter and Eoghan Travers creating some good chances but again Killowen’s keeper came to their rescue.

Rathfriland’s captain, Christopher McConville tried to lead from the front with a number of surging runs from defence and then he had a thunder bolt of a free kick saved by yet again Killowen’s great keeper. Adam Trimble played in defence this week and showed his versatility with an impressive performance at right back.

When it looked like Rathfriland were not going to add to their goal tally, up stepped Shane Haughey who put in a “Man of the Match” performance to score another three fantastic goals which gave Rathfriland a real chance of getting something out of the game. This is the second week running were Shane has scored four goals which is a fantastic achievement. Killowen went on to score a fifth goal to win the game but Rathfriland can take a lot out of this game. They showed great determination to get back into the game.
