Unbeaten run extended to eight games

DROMORE Amateurs Seconds, sponsored by McDonald’s Mace, are in the habit of winning matches these days - and on Saturday they extended their unbeaten run to eight games with a 4-1 victory away to Lisburn side, Wesley.

Goals from Stuart Curran, Aaron Noble and a double strike from Philip Gordon - who is relishing his new-found role in attack after years playing in defence - eased Dromore to their fifth win in eight outings.

This victory, at the hard and bumpy Ballymacross playing fields, consolidates the Amateurs’ seventh place position in 3F and leaves them with a healthy 33 points.

And it was another win inspired by the in-form Curran, who was pulling all the strings and dominating the midfield with a box-to-box, man-of-the-match performance.

The Amateurs took the lead on 15 minutes when a wonderful flowing move down the right ended with the ball squared across to Gordon and he made no mistake by confidently drilling the ball into the Wesley net.

Within 10 minutes, Ronnie McMurray’s side had doubled their lead - Gordon turned provider when he fizzed over a cross from the left and there was Curran who almost burst the net with an unstoppable volley.

Dromore looked at this stage as though they were going to run riot but inexplicably dropped their workrate and Wesley were allowed back into the game, reducing the deficit to 2-1 with a scrappy goal before the interval.

Dromore set about their task in the second half much more professionally and all nerves were calmed when the irrepressible Curran chased down a Wesley defender, poached the ball from him on the byline and calmly picked out Gordon in the centre, who again lashed a fierce drive beyond the Wesley keeper.

Although Dromore really should have racked up a much higher tally - and they certainly created the chances - Wesley battled right till the end, and the Amateurs only managed one further goal when Noble grabbed his 13th of the season by being in the right place at the right time to fire home on the rebound from 10 yards.

Team: N Beggs, R McMurray, D McCauley, R Ward, G Hill, D McDowell, C Harper, S Curran, P Gordon, N Walsh, A Noble. Sub: A McCartan.

Dromore are entering the home straight now as they embark on their final five games of the season, starting this Saturday with a tough fixture away to promotion-chasing Ardoyne WMC.
