United aim for cup glory

Newbuildings United host Dunmurry Rec in their historic sixth round JJB Sports Irish Cup this Saturday. (KO 2pm).

The Waterside club lost in last weekend’s dress rehearsal to Dunmurry in the Intermediate Cup. The tie was level 1-1 after extra time with the visitors winning 4-2 on penalties.

Newbuildings manager, Wesley Robinson is ‘quietly confident’ his team can progress to the next round he told the Sentinel: “ I am disappointed at last weekends result. We didn’t play well but still we created enough chances to win. They (Dunmurry) had one shot on target the entire game and left with a win.

“We played with ten men for the last thirty minutes of the game and in extra time and although we were knocked out of the Intermediate Cup I think we have nothing to fear ahead of the this weekends Irish Cup match.”

Newbuildings will be without centre half Jason Moore who is suspended follwing his dismissal against Dunmurry last weekend. Robinson will make some changes to the team as his side look to progress to the next round.

Asked if his team was weakened by the Moore suspension Robinson stated “The loss of Jason Moore is significant. But I am upbeat after the ten man performance.

“We really stretched them and although I am without Jason I believe that the players I am bringing in can only strengthen the squad. Both Paul McIvor and Matthew Smith will add some qulaity to a side that is pretty good at the moment”.

Progression to the next round could see Newbuildings drawn against Irish League premiership opposition.

This could provide United with a much needed financial windfall.

Robinson speculated that “if we progress then it would be nice to catch a draw against a big club. Linfield, Glentoran, Cliftonville or Coleraine would be just brilliant. Firstly we have to beat Dunmurry.

“They are a very useful team that play in a very tough league. This weekends encounter is going to prove to be a real test so we are lloking forward to that and not beyond this weekends opponents.”
