United set for first Limavady trip since 2008 in League Cup

The Sky Blues travel to Limavady United in the third round of the competition on Wednesday night (7.45pm) - their first visit to the Rathmore Road Showgrounds since March 2008.

Back then the clubs both held Premiership status but the north west side have since dropped into Championship Two, where they are currently in the hunt for promotion.

“I think the last time I was at Limavady I scored playing for Linfield so that was a long, long time ago!” laughed Ballymena boss Glenn Ferguson.

“We will go with our strongest squad because we want to progress to the next round.

Ferguson’s main concern is in the full-back positions with both Tony Kane and Michael Ruddy serving bans.

Veteran left-back Stephen McBride is also an absentee after suffering a temporary loss of sight in one eye after being struck in the face with the ball at the weekend, resulting in bleeding behind the pupil. He is due to return to hospital on Wednesday but reports an improvement in his vision.

“We will have to look at who we can get in and take it from there. We will have a training session on Tuesday night and take a head count and see who we have,” said Ferguson, who is not dismissing Limavady lightly

“We’ve had them watched three or four times and we know they’re a threat. There’s a lad up front who is scoring plenty of goals for them,” added Ferguson.

Seven Towers Supporters’ Club transport to Limavady leaves Henry Street car park at 6.30pm, while the bus for Saturday’s league game at Glenavon departs the same venue at 1.30pm.
