Update: Calderwood strike secure title for Raceview

RACEVIEW secured the Ballymena and Provincial Intermediate League title last night (Tuesday) with a 1-0 victory over Carniny Amateurs.

It was a nail biting affair for the Broughshane team after their potential title decider with Newtowne last weekend failed to produce a winner.

The sides drew 2-2 in a game where victory for either of them would have secured the Michelin Athletic Club-sponsored Championship.

While that was Newtowne’s final game of the campaign, Raceview were able to pip them to the crown with their win against ‘derby’ rivals Carniny Amateurs at Broughshane.

It was the Broughshane team’s 4th legal title in 7 years and the match was played in front of a large crowd of vocal spectators. In short, there wasn’t much between the teams and credit Carniny for pushing their rivals all the way.

After a cat and mouse first half, Stefan Calderwood scored with 25 minutes remaining on the clock. The Broughshane team also had a glaring opportunity to score through Jonny Hume but, in the end, Raceview held out until the final whistle with captain Mark Ritchie lifting the trophy at the end of what has been a long, hard but rewarding season.
