Utd’s strike force does the damage

FOR the second time in a row Newbuildings United found the back of the net five times, this time beating Ardstraw 5-1 in the League Cup, on Saturday.

The home side started brightly and opened the scoring on 15 minutes when a long throw from Bryan Scanlon landed at the feet of Nathan Robinson who turned and shot low into the far corner of the net from 8 yards out.

United were dominating possession but were stunned when the visitors leveled in the 25th minute when they were awarded a free kick just outside the box which their striker coolly dispatched into the corner of the net.

Newbuildings hit back straight away when a shot from Robinson was spilled by the Ardstraw keeper and the alert Stephen Curry nipped in to head the ball home from close range.

The front four of Curry, Wayne Glenn, Wallace and Robinson were causing the away side’s defence all sorts of problems and Newbuildings increased their lead when Robinson scored from the spot after a shot from Wallace was handled by an Ardstraw defender.

The second half saw Ardstraw struggle to get out of their half with the home side playing some great football but they were unable to find the end product.

Glenn went close when he was played through but hit the post form a tight angle.

The Waterside out-fit did make it four when good play down the right saw Curry cross to the back post and find Wallace who out jumped the Ardstraw defender to head home.

Trevor McSparron who came on for Robinson had a great chance when he was played through by David Scanlon but he lost his footing just as he was about to shoot with just the keeper to beat.

The home side completed the rout when again good work down the right flank saw Nelson, who came on for Blair, deliver a great cross for the onrushing Glenn to volley home from six yards out.

United will now travel to Dungiven next week for the quarter final of the Craig Memorial Cup (KO 2.30pm), while the Reserves will entertain City Colts in the league with a 2pm KO.
