The former Sligo Rovers skipper has, like his boss Roddy Collins, signed a one year deal with the Candystripes, and wants to maintain his winning habit.

In recent seasons the Liverpudlian has been involved with Sligo teams that have won the FAI Cup three times and secured the Airtricity League Premier Division title.

“There’s a mentality amongst the Derry lads, similar to myself, that they never know when they’re beaten, and that’s drilled into them from a young age,” stated Ventre.

“All they do is graft and have a go and that’s why I’m here. I’m here to have a good go and bring success to Derry.

“I’ve got a good record against Derry so hopefully I can turn things around and have a good record against Sligo. I always loved coming up to Derry and playing in the Brandywell. There’s always a great atmosphere and they were always tough games against Derry.

“It will be strange leaving Sligo. I played there for several seasons and I was very successful there. I did everything that I wanted and was asked of. I won the League, the FAI Cup three times, the League Cup, so it was very successful.

“But Roddy offered me a new challenge, which I was happy to take up. I needed a change of scenery and the best place for that was Derry. That’s what I’m here for now; to bring Derry some success in the next few years.”

The 27-year-old also says he’s looking forward to working with his new manager.

“I’ve spoken to a lot of players who have played for him in the past and all they’ve said is good things about him,” Ventre added.

“There’s not been one bad word about him. He’s told me how he’s going to work and how he’s going to go through the season and I’m really looking forward to it.

“He’s been true to his word so far so I’ve only got things to look forward to. I’m looking forward to working with him because he seems to be a good character.

“I was actually talking to him six months ago and he told me that wherever he went I would come back for me and he’s been true to his word, which is brilliant.”
