Victory for Olympic seals promotion

COOKSTOWN Olympic travelled last Saturday to play Carnlough Swifts in their last fixture of the season and after a hard match they eventually came away with a one nil win.

This now leaves Olympic on top of Division two of the Ballymena League but their nearest rivals 3rd Ballyclare Old Boys are nine points behind with five games in hand. This means promotion to Division one next season, but it remains to be seen if they will go up as League winners as 3rd Ballyclare have the games in hand. Olympic had the first chance after 7 minutes as John Gilmore put Conor O’Hare through one on one but the Carnlough keeper saved well. Three minutes later and it was the combination of the Conors, O’Hare and O’Reilly that set Liam Hoy up for a shot that just curled wide.

Carnlough then started to come into the match battling hard around midfield but then Olympic saw a John Gilmore shot scream over the bar after 38 minutes. The game then got bogged down into a bit of a physical contest for the remainder of the half with Olympic standing up to the challenge and keeping Carnlough at arm’s length. In the second half Carnlough, as expected, launched an all out assault on Cookstown and 3 minutes into the half keeper Jamie O’Neill brilliantly saved but the ball spun up towards the goals but Mark Meenan cleared off the line.

Then on 54 minutes Olympic broke forward with Ruairi Scullion putting John Gilmore through but his shot was just wide. Then came the winning goal after 58 minutes as Conor O’Hare found leading goal scorer Ryan O’Neill on the left and he cut in past two defenders before slotting the ball past the keeper. An injury then forced an Olympic change and a bit of a reshuffle and Carnlough started to exert more pressure but the Olympic rearguard of McSloy, Meenan, O’Hare and Mullan defended their line to hold out the homesters. Olympic did enjoy more of the ball for the remainder of the half and had chances for O’Hare, Hoy and McVey but they could not convert.
