“In games like this, the most important thing is simply getting through,” said Ferguson, after goals from Tony Kane, Darren Boyce and Matthew Tipton took United past the challenge of the Championship Two side.

The only downside were a number of injuries to Ballymena players.

The manager hopes midfielder Gary Thompson and striker Matthew Tipton will have recovered from knocks ahead of Friday night’s Danske Bank Premiership game at Glenavon, while left-back Michael Ruddy will have an X-ray after sustaining a blow to the top of his foot.
