VIDEO: Homers land first SML silverware of season

The firmus energy Top Four Final was played on Friday night under lights at Ballymena Showgrounds with Harryville Homers beating Carniny Rangers by two goals to nil.

In a tight opening it was Carniny who had the first shot on goal when Frazer Young stung the palms of Ryan Martin from long range.

On 15 minutes with their first real threatening attack Homers took the lead. Ryan Stewart dispossessed Frazer Young and played the ball wide to Alan Rainey whose inch perfect cross was headed home at the back post by Gary Bonnes.

On the half hour mark Homers almost made it 2-0 when a flick from Gary Bonnes was cleared off the line by James Gracey.

Carniny started to come more into the game after this with Darren Kidd having two shots just wide the second of which was deflected wide.

Both teams struggled to get a grip of the game at the start of the second half as the game flowed from end to end. Homers almost made it 2-0 on the hour mark when a wicked cross from Ryan Stewart was narrowly missed by Gary Bonnes.

Carniny introduced Maurice McDowell and Richard Reid soon after this and this proved the catalyst for them to get in the ascendency, as both combined to set up Ryan Sands whose powerful shot was saved by Ryan Martin.

Carniny’s Ryan Bamber then blazed over after a Frazer Young free kick caused a goal mouth scramble. Homers keeper Ryan Martin made a super save 12 minutes from time when he reacted well to push away a Richard Reid header after a perfect cross from Maurice McDowell.

With 3 minutes to go Homers sealed the win when Alan Rainey chased down a lost cause took the ball from a Carniny defender before squaring to substitute Jason Magill who sidestepped Alex McCosh before smashing the ball into the roof of the net to make it 2-0.

After the final whistle David Fusco of firmus energy handed the Top Four Cup over to winning Harryville Homers Captain Gary Bonnes and the celebrations began.

BALLYMENA MORTGAGES DIVISION ONE

Ahoghill Thistle 3, All Saints OB 0: This game saw two unbeaten sides come up against each other and it was Saints who opened the better, and they should have taken the lead after 6 minutes when Gavin Burnside turned his man in the box but Thistle keeper Stewart McDonald did well to save with his feet.

A mix up in the Saints defence then left Matt Boyd with a great chance but his effort hit the post.

Thistle opened the scoring on 32 minutes when Alan Moore broke down the right and sent in a low cross for David Tennant to slide home and send his side in a goal to the good at the break.

Six minutes into the second half Thistle doubled their lead. David Tennant slipped his man on the half way line and played in Matt Boyd who squared to George Courtney who picked his spot from 18 yards out.

With five minutes to go Thistle ensured all three points when David Tennant wriggled his way past two Saints men before sliding the ball to Matt Boyd to slam the ball home to complete Thistle’s 10th League win out of 10 games.

BALLYMENA MORTGAGES DIVISION TWO

Raceview 5, Cloughmills 1: Cloughmills were well in the game until Raceview took the lead after 21 minutes when an Ian Millar corner kick fell to the unmarked Uel Adams at the back post and he fired home.

Five minutes later it was 2-0 when new signing Jason Stevenson split the Cloughmills defence to put Andy Duncan clear and he slotted the ball home.

The game was killed off as a contest 5 minutes before half time when the ever dangerous Andy Duncan beat two defenders and pick his spot before firing home to send Raceview three up at half time.

The second half saw little let up from Raceview and they scored a fourth goal when Robert Ritchie played Derek Montgomery through and he found the net from six yards. Continuous pressure from Raceview resulted in their fifth goal when a dangerous cross by Jamie Craig forced a Cloughmills defender to put the ball past his own keeper.

Cloughmills kept going until the end and they got their reward with a consolation goal 2 minutes from time when Kieran McGaughey scored.
