Wakehurst boss pleased to notch Ann-other win

WAKEHURST manager Ian Gregg was a happy man as his side resumed its Belfast Telegraph Championship Two campaign with a 4-3 win over Annagh United on Saturday.

“I actually felt we were more comfortable than the scoreline suggests,” Gregg told Times Sport.

“We were 3-1 up at half-time and even though they pulled one back, we got to 4-2 ahead and they scored their third with the last kick of the game.

“Technique-wise, we’re as good as any team in this division but what pleased me was the tempo we played at and the aggression, in a controlled sense, that we showed in our play.

“Once again our two strikers were excellent. Conor Gregg scored a goal that would grace any game and although, unusually, Jason Paul didn’t score, his pace and runs in behind defenders were excellent,” added Gregg.

Wakehurst continued the form they showed in their 4-0 demolition of Ballymoney United in their last game, taking a ninth minute lead when Ryan Gregg swung in an inviting cross from a free-kick on the left and David Gage headed downwards and past Andy Wright.

Ryan Young was off the pitch receiving treatment four minutes later and with Wakehurst reduced to ten players, Annagh struck back, Darragh Peden finding the net after the home defence failed to clear.

Jason Paul and Conor Gregg combined on 23 minutes, Gregg latching onto Paul’s through ball before steadying himself and picking his spot from all of 20 yards.

Right on the half time whistle it was Gregg again bursting into the penalty box before being upended by Nathan Riddell and the striker sent his team in 3-1 ahead at the break.

Shea Campbell reduced the deficit on 49 minutes coolly slotting the ball past Maybin.

Wakehurst still had the greater possession and Ryan Young restored the 2 goal advantage with an expertly controlled volley from 22 yards. Wakehurst controlled the remainder of the game without adding to their score and it was Annagh who grabbed a third goal in the 92nd minute, Richie Allen getting a touch to turn in a low cross.
