Wakehurst over the 'Moon as run of defeats ends

WAKEHURST ended their run of six successive defeats with an overdue 4-2 IFA Championship Two win over Cookstown side Killymoon Rangers on Saturday.

Wakehurst started strongly with several half chances giving an indication that they approaching this game with real enthusiasm.

The early chances paid off as 16 minutes in Wakehurst took the lead. Steven McIlroy played Paul Borelan in and he held off two Killymoon defenders before poking the finish home.

Killymoon's first real chance came on 26 minutes with a long-range effort from Stuart Glasgow, which whistled past the post.

On 32 minutes, Andrew Erwin made an energetic run on the right wing; his cross found Borelan for the possibility of a brace but his shot was saved.

Wakehurst got their second three minutes later when a long free kick crossed into the box saw Roy Colville climb above the Killymoon defenders and head home.

Wakehurst continued their dominance after the break; 49 minutes in Stevie Mellon looped a cross to the back post and Ryan Gregg's header made it past the keeper.

Shortly after the third Wakehurst were reduced to ten as McIlroy was given a second yellow.

On 59 minutes the Killymoon keeper came to claim a Wakehurst cross but missed the interception completely. The ball ran on to Mellon who couldn't control his shot to give Wakehurst a fourth.

Borelan eventually did grab his second, and Wakehurst's fourth, when he headed home a corner in the 69th minute.

Killymoon pulled a goal back two minutes later as a lax defensive header allowed Warren Smith to nip in and reduce the deficit.

Killymoon got a second with four minutes to go but it was too little too late as Wakehurst held out for a much needed win.
