Wakehurst remain unbeaten after Armagh stalemate

WAKEHURST'S unbeaten run in the league continued on Saturday with an excellent 2-2 draw against Armagh City at Mill Meadow. Wakehurst had three first team regulars back to boost the squad.

There was not much goal action in the first 15 minutes with both teams starting cautiously. First real goal scoring opportunity fell to Wakehurst on 17 minutes when they were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area.

McIlroy's free was cleared by Peadar Toal but fell to Stephen Gage who headed across goal to Jason Paul whose shot was well saved by Morgan in the Armagh goal. Jason Paul was in the action a few minutes later and he tested the keeper with a great effort from 20 yards out. Armagh had a chance on 20 minutes but Gavin Marks made a good save from Michael O'Neill. On 22 minutes Wakehurst should have been awarded a penalty when David Paul was blatantly fouled in the penalty area but the referee didnt agree. Wakehurst got the goal they richly deserved on 26 minutes when Richard Mellon provided David Paul with a great pass and he made no mistake firing into the bottom corner giving the Armagh keeper no chance and making it 1-0 for Wakehurst. Within 10 minutes, Armagh had equalised when Francis McCann's effort from outside the area beat Gavin Marks to make it 1-1.

On 40 minutes, Mark Crawford had a great chance to put Wakehurst ahead when Jason Paul put him through with a delightful pass but the Armagh keeper denied him. On the stroke of half time, Jason Paul made it 2-1 for Wakehurst after good work by Mark Crawford. In the first minute of the second half Richard Mellon should have scored but Morgan again made a good save to keep Armagh in it. Armagh's best chance of the half came on 73 minutes when McEvoy found himself in a good position but he skied the ball high and wide. Wakehurst were awarded a free kick on 80 minutes but Crawford's free went just wide of the post. Wakehurst dominated the second half and just when it seemed as if they had done enough to win it, on 85 minutes Jonathan Walker headed home a Nesbitt corner to make it 2-2 in what was a very entertaining game.
