Wakehurst suffer defeat by police

Wakehurst are still struggling for consistency in the League, failing to back up their 3-2 victory over PSNI a fortnight ago, as they slumped to a 5-2 defeat in their ‘home’ game at Mill Meadow, Castledawson.

An injury to central defender Chris Rogers, who was dominant during this period, led to a reshuffle of the back four and to compound this setback, PSNI took full advantage when full back Colm Kirgan rifled his shot past Wakehurst keeper McCauley Cairns from 25 yards.

A good run from Jason Paul four minutes later earned his side a penalty when he was upended and Conor Gregg casually found the back of the net from the spot kick.

But in the 34th minute Peter Steele picked the ball up on the halfway line and as the Wakehurst defence retreated, Steele kept going and lashed in number three for PSNI from 15 yards.

Matt Holden made it four in the 40th minute with a tremendous half volley from the edge of the 18 yard box that ripped into the roof of the net.

From the restart, Wakehurst opened up the visitors defence and Jason Paul finished it off with a precise shot.

Wakehurst suffered another setback 8 minutes into the second half when Ryan Young was forced off through injury with Gavin Gilmore slotting into the right full back position.

It was PSNI who confirmed their win with a fifth goal on 77 minutes. Peter Steele raced away on the left and though Gilmore forced him towards the byeline, he still managed to get his shot on target and it deflected into the Wakehurst net off the luckless Cairns.

There was still time for a sending off, PSNI full back Simon Robb seeing ‘red’ after an incident with Wakehurst striker Conor Gregg near the right corner flag, but it was PSNI who took all three points back to Belfast.

Wakehurst: Cairns, Crawford, Gage, Rogers, Dickey, Mellon, C Gregg, Paul, R Gregg, R Young. Subs: Maybin, Lemon, G Young, McCaughern, Gilmore.

Wakehurst travel to Tobermore this Saturday (2pm).
