Wanderers youthaiming for league

FOYLE Wanderers’ youth training scheme continues to grow from strength to strength.

Only started in January, the training, which takes place at Bready Cricket Club, every Saturday morning, caters for children at Under 9 and Under 16 levels and organiser Graham Baxter believes next year the sides will be able to compete in a league.

“We received £6,000 from Gateway to Protestant Participation (GPP), £3,000 went to ourselves and we bought various equipment and we were able to put five coaches through the Irish Football Association’s Level 1 coaching course, while the other £3,000 went to the Magheramason Community Development Centre,” admitted Baxter.

“Whenever we started in January we had just around seven kids, but now we have grown to around 40 children, which is split into two sections.

“Apart from training every week, they play friendlies every three or four weeks against various teams from around the North West; maybe next year we’ll be able to enter a league, but at the minute we are just concentrating mainly on the training.

“We train every Saturday at Bready CC and if anyone is interested in taking part, they can come along, we get underway at 10am until 11.15am.”
