The Peterborough United defender is hoping he’ll get the nod for Michael O’Neill’s squad for the tournament.

Smith, 27, made his international debut in the 1-0 win over Slovenia in March at Windsor Park, and is now targeting a seat on the plane to France.

Speaking about his recent call-up, the former Ballyclare Comrades right-back told the Irish FA: “I got a text from the chairman (at Peterborough) saying congratulations before I had heard. That’s when it all became real to me. I was so excited to join up with the squad and get involved.

“It’s up to me to put in the performances and hopefully get selected (for the Euros). It would be a dream come true. It would be absolutely fantastic for my career.”
