David Hanna’s men battled hard in inclement weather conditions before eventually succumbing by two goals to nil against promotion-chasing Aquinas at the Showgrounds.

The ‘reds’ fielded a very young side with no less than six players from the clubs Under 17s and 19s sides starting the game and finished the game by far the stronger of the two sides.

In fact had the game not been blown up 10 minutes early due to torrential rain it would have been more than possible they would have reduced the arrears. Carniny started well and played some attractive passing football probing the visitors defence with Price and McKernan causing the Belfast side problems.

After 23 minutes Aquinas took the lead against the run of play which was unfortunate for Barr in goal for Carniny who had no chance from a well headed goal from the back post.

As the rain came down heavier in the second half, Carniny continued to press but on the hour the visitors made it 2-0 when a shot from outside the box took a wicked deflection and beat the otherwise impressive Barr. Carniny were well in the game and had several chances which unfortunately came to nothing although seemed to be dealing better with the conditions.

With 80 minutes played the referee believed the pitch to be unplayable and brought the game to an early close.

Carniny Amateurs: Barr, Hart, Waring, Bunting, Mekdade, Surgenor, Hanna, Price, Murray, McKernan, Chesney, Greene, Martin.
