Wee Reds, Ballynure and Grange Rangers left kicking their heels

Ballyclare Comrades Reserves, Ballynure Old Boys and Grange Rangers were left kicking their heels at the weekend when their matches postponed owing to waterlogged pitches.

Comrades Reserves’ pole position in the Ballymena Junior League Division 1 is unchanged, five points ahead of Newington II YC who, however, have two games in hand, but Antrim Rovers moved up to third spot following their win against FC Whiteabbey.

“Five straight league wins have us in a healthy position, especially after beating our main rivals Newington last week, but we must guard against complacency as they have played two games fewer than we have,” said manager Ronnie Burns. “However I am disappointed that we will have another free date this weekend,” he added.

Ronnie’s brother, Gary, who is the Ballynure boss, is also a table-topper in the Ballymena and Provincial Intermediate Division where he holds a three-point advantage over Newtowne. And there was no change at the weekend with the Limavady lads also sidelined.

“Newtowne knocked us out of the Crawford Cup last weekend, so they are a force to be reckoned with,” reminded Gary, “but we were without several regulars that day, and when we have the big guns on display we will hope to reverse that result when we clash in the league.”

Ballynure travel to Dunloy this weekend to fulfil a league fixture.

Grange Rangers had hoped to leap-frog Ravenhill YM into fourth spot in the Amateur League Division 2C, but the clash in Belfast was another victim of heavy overnight rain.

“Ravenhill had twelve points while we had 10, so following three wins from our last four outings we were hoping to grab the chance to move above them,” said skipper Matt Cooper.
