Wee Reds see off Ballynure OB

Strikes by teenagers Kyle Woods and Scott Cummings gave Ballyclare Comrades Reserves’ new-look team an encouraging 2-1 win over Ballynure Old Boys in their first pre-season friendly.

Gary Burns named a much-changed side from the one that won the Ballymena Intermediate League title, but, nevertheless, his Ballynure side turned round one up, when Daniel Ellis fired the ball past Jonah Nicholl.

Both managers made changes for the second session, with Stephen Hughes’ lads drawing level on the hour, when Cummings finished off a move involving Michael Haskins and Ryan McIlwaine.

Ten minutes from time substitute Woods tapped home the winner, after McIlwaine had disposed a defender leaving keeper Paul Hughes exposed.

“It was a great workout for the young lads, especially against experienced opposition,” said Hughes.

Ballynure manager Burns said: “Comrades Reserves are a good wee team that moves the ball around well.

“We have once again lost our first pre-season match, but it was good to see Barry Penny back in action after missing the last two months of the season with a knee injury.”
