‘We’ll take nothing for granted in Cup’

Carrick Rangers remain unbeaten under Gary Haveron, but the rookie manager warns against the utter folly of taking anything for granted as they head to rural mid-Ulster for an Irish Cup match against a team which is currently helping prop up the league table.

One win from 11 league games and 43 goals conceding along the way, including five against Limavady United last weekend, may make the Hagan Park outfit appear like almost willing victims these days. But such thinking won’t enter the equation, as far as Haveron is concerned!

“The trip to play Coagh United might seem on paper to be a simple enough task for us, but it’s anything but an easy outing,” he warned. “They may have suffered another big defeat last Saturday, but this weekend will be seen by their camp as an opportunity to boost their morale.

“It’s a one-off situation and the mindset can be very different on these occasions and that’s why there can be giant-killing acts. So, while we are going to Coagh with plenty of momentum, we will also go with the right attitude and be determined to get the result we need.

“We went to Limavady last weekend with the right frame of mind and we got the reward with three very good away points won. It was as comfortable as the 5-0 scoreline suggests, Limavady fielding a young team.

“We scored an early goal, followed up with another fairly soon and a third before half-time sort of knocked the stuffing out of them.

“However, it was not a time for resting on our laurels and we asked the guys to go out for the second-half and keep doing the same and they did a professional job to kill them off.

“The Institute-Dundela result went the right way for us, a point apiece. But we know that we still have to keep banking points in the league, with Bangor and Knockbreda and other still securing wins as well. And Dundela are still very much the team to catch.

“Things are looking well, however, and we are content also in the knowledge that after Christmas we will have a lot of home games when Taylor’s Avenue is thankfully available again.

“We are pleased as well that we are able to give more players some game time. Guys like Ryan McCann, Damien Curran and Ryan Burns have been back in the side and we have other quality players who haven’t been able to get into the 16.

“But we will be trying very hard to get more guys out on the pitch, with some changes anticipated for the cup match in Coagh.”
