Wellington Rec remain bottom of Division 1A

Wellington Rec remain rooted to the bottom of the Amateur League’s Division 1A, with only one point out of a possible 21, although there were signs of improvement in Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Rosario Youth Club.

Assistant-manager Kenny Thompson said: “We were better than we were the week before, and we will just have to try and improve week by week. We are trying to get some players in. One thing we will have to try to stop is conceding silly goals; that’s what is killing us!”

Wellington seemed to be getting off on the right footing, with Paul McCann and Scott Todd going close, but instead it was Rosario who showed the way on 11 minutes, when a corner was cleared only as far as the edge of the box.

Rec tried to respond with Gary Nelson and Mark McFall going close, only for Rosario to widen the margin with the visitors’ defence caught out by a long ball over the top.

On 25 minutes Rosario notched a third although Wellington never gave up and clawed one back 10 minutes later when Ellis Cahoon turned in a Curtis Rees cross.

Wellington still believed they could salvage something but that all decisive ‘next goal’ went to Rosario just after the break, thanks to another unforced error in the Rec rearguard.
