Welshman Cup joy for Carniny Amateurs

CARNINY Amateurs secured their first silverware since joining the Ballymena and Provincial Junior League on Saturday when they beat Carnlough Swifts 3-1 to win the Linda Welshman Memorial Cup, the final of which had been carried over from last season.

Meanwhile, in the intermediate division, Portglenone continued their steady climb away from the foot of the table with a 5-3 victory over FC Ballynure.

It was an amazing game at Gortgole Road which saw all eight goals scored inside the first 32 minutes!

Elsewhere, Raceview kept up their pursuit of back-to-back league titles with a 4-2 win at Kilbride Swifts, helped by an Andy Duncan hat-trick.

The other local team in action, Clough Rangers Athletic, had a 2-2 draw with rasharkin but the game was marred by an injury to Clough player Colin McCrory, who had to be taken to hospital with a dislocated shoulder. Best wishes are extended to Colin for a speedy recovery.

Carniny Amateurs 3, Carnlough Swifts 1: This final, played on a super surface at Allen Park, Antrim, was a very tight game until Ciaran McGarry chipped the ball through for Jordan Graham to open the scoring for Carniny from close range on the 36th minute.

Carnlough replied straight away when Carniny conceded a penalty on the 37th minute which Ryan Mitchell converted.

Carnlough had a man dismissed for a second yellow card on the 77th minute. After this Carniny pushed forward but Carnlough held firm until conceding a penalty on the 86th minute which Nicky McCartney converted and straight away Carnlough had a man sent off for striking an opponent.

Time was then almost up when Dean Magill caught the entire Carnlough team in the Carniny half before running through to score number three.

The Cup was then presented to the winning captain by Mr Robert Fenton the league Vice Chairman who also thanked the Chimney Corner Club for the use of the excellent facilities.

INTERMEDIATE LEAGUE

Clough Rangers Athletic 2, Rasharkin United 2: Both teams settled early in this derby game but the first goal did not come until the 20th minute.

This was a penalty which Ian Parkhill converted for Rasharkin and minutes after this Clough had a man sent off for a second yellow card.

Though a man short Clough were never out of the game and they got back level after Dean Dunlop scored on the 60th minute and followed this up with a second goal when Aaron Wilkinson ran through to score on the 70th minute.

Clough then had a second player sent off, again for a second booking, and as time began to run down Dale Armstrong scored the equaliser for Rasharkin on the 83rd minute.

Portglenone 5, FC Ballynure 3: Portglenone got off to a great start with Colin Craig converting a penalty on the 2nd minute but Ballynure were back level on the 10th minute after Phil Hall scored.

Hall then scored a screamer from 25yards on the 12th minute and on the 15th minute Nicky Agnew put Ballynure two goals clear.

Portglenone then got a second penalty which Colin Craig converted on the 16th minute then on the 17th minute he headed in to complete his hat-trick.

Mark McNicholl then put Portglenone in front from a 25yard free kick on the 20th minute and Chris Kearns extended this with number five on the 32nd minute.

This completed the goals on the day but Portglenone had to thank keeper Leon Bonnes who brought off three top class saves to deny Ballynure further goals.

Kilbride Swifts 2, Raceview 4: This game got off to a fast start with Andrew Duncan putting Raceview in front on the 1st minute only to see Craig Singleton hit home the equaliser on the 2nd minute.

Kilbride then went in front after Gordon Baird scored on the 26th minute but as half-time approached Andrew Duncan scored his second goal for Raceview sending the teams in level at the break.

Early in the second half Andrew Duncan completed his hat-trick on the 51st minute this being followed by another Raceview goal scored by Jordan Lemon on the 72nd minute.

Kilbride had a good chance to reduce the deficit from the penalty spot on the 75th minute but missed the chance and worse was to follow as they had three players dismissed at separate times as the clock was running down.

JUNIOR DIVISION ONE

Tobermore United Reserves 2, Chimney Corner Reserves 1: Tobermore took the lead after Mark Folliard scored on the 17th minute and he then followed this with his second goal in the game on the 25th minute.

Corner got back into the game after Jamie Nutter scored on the 37th minute cutting the deficit to one at the break. The second half saw chances at both ends but none taken.

Raceview Athletic 0, Desertmartin Swifts 0: Both teams played a lot of good football in this game but their finishing failed to match this.

Desertmartin had the chance to win the game from the penalty spot on the 15th minute but the Athletic keeper made a super save.

JUNIOR DIVISION THREE

Antrim Rovers 3, Mallusk Athletic 1: Antrim went in front after Andy Stewart scored on the 17th minute and held this lead until Phil Brown scored for Mallusk on the 60th minutes.

Antrim replied to this with Andy Stewart scoring his second goal on the 64th minute and then sealing the game for Antrim when he completed his hat-trick on the 86th minute.

Wakehurst Strollers 4, Encore FC 2: Strollers, who notched up their fifth win of the season with this victory, had to wait until the 35th minute for their first goal scored by Jason Adams.

Strollers doubled their lead after Jason Adams scored his second goal on the 47th minute and then added a third when Ian McCracken scored on the 56th minute.

Encore then got a goal back when Raymond Hall scored from the penalty spot on the 62nd minute and a second goal after Derek Agnew on the 68th minute saw then back in contention.

Time was then beginning to run down when Jon Alexander caught Encore with a fourth goal for Strollers on the 82nd minute.
