Wes Gregg memorial game

The football world was shocked and saddened last May after the passing of Wesley.

He devoted his life to football, and in particular Coleraine and Portstewart.

“Because of Wes’ love of the game and his affiliation with both clubs we decided an annual game between the teams in his memory would be fitting,” Coleraine boss Oran Kearney told Times Sport.

“Wes touched the lives of so many people both on a local level and throughout the country, and I’ve no doubt there will be another big crowd at Portstewart this Friday night (July 29th) to pay tribute to him.

“Wes loved football and he loved Coleraine and Portstewart so he deserves to be remembered in this way.”

The game at Mullaghacall kicks off at 7.30pm.

Meanwhile the Bannsiders continued their preparations for the new season with a convincing 4-0 win at Letterkenny Rovers last Saturday.

New signing Gary Twigg fired the Bannsiders ahead on 16 minutes with a composed finish after some good work by Darren McCauley.

It was Twigg’s second in as many games as he netted on his debut in the 5-0 win over Glebe Rangers midweek

Rovers though were not overawed and were lively in attack with the excellent Brian McVeigh and debutant Darragh Black giving the highly experienced Coleraine back line some food for thought although very little in chances of note were created.

It took Coleraine to 68 minutes to double the advantage on Saturday when James McLaughlin beat the offside trap following a neat pass by Sammy Morrow and the striker slipped the ball into the net.

Rovers did have a golden chance to reduce the deficit from the spot on 72 minutes after Gareth McConachie was deemed by referee Michael Connolly of pulling Darren McElwaines shirt but Chris Johns denied Rovers when diving to his right to pull off the save.

Three minutes later, Rovers were to rue that miss as the Bannsiders scored a third as McCauley produced a cool finish. With a few minutes remaining and Rovers visibly tiring the visitors added some gloss to the scoreline as Jamie McGonigle released Lyndon Kane down the right-hand side and his cut back was finished by Sammy Morrow.

Coleraine finish off their pre season plans on Saturday at home to Dergview.
