WHAT’S IN A NAME?

The English giants, who having been coming to the North Coast for 23 years, missed out on the final last year, but in their squad this time out is a player with strong links to the competition.

In 1990 Nick Barmby inspired Tottenham Hotspur to glory and was rightly named Player of the Tournament.

United coach Paul McGuiness is hoping Barmby’s son Jack, one of English football’s most promising talents, will help his side to do the same.

“It’s a nice story and it’s great that Jack is here to carry on the Barmby name,” Paul told Times Sport.

“That’s the nice thing about football that things like that can happen.

“And obviously Corry Evans who played here also is now playing with Jack’s dad at Hull.

“We had a nice little run being in the final three years in a row and winning it twice, and I know from coming for so long that’s not an easy thing to do.

“We always hope to get there, but the main thing is to get a really good week where the boys are together.

“We cement the foundations of our aims for the season ahead, they get a lot of team spirit and they get a lot of exposure to United fans and all that goes with it.

“So for us it’s the perfect week for pre-season.

“We’ve a couple of guys from the FA Youth Cup winning team with us.

“Most of them have moved up into the Reserves, which is good for their progression.

“So we have a lot of new young first years with us this time, and that’s great for them their first few weeks as a full time player to come to a tournament like this where Manchester United is such a big name.”
