Whites show Steel to win

The Steel and Sons cup kicked off for Lisburn Distillery with a home tie against Bloomfield.

They went ahead on 16 minutes after good work on the right by Chris Kingsberry allowed him to cross it in for Ally Wilson. The striker pulled the ball back for Jimmy McIlhagga who placed his shot beautifully into the top left corner of the net - his third goal of the season.

Bloomfield were level on two minutes when Gavin Munn won a corner. It was swung in by Michael Getty onto the head of Matt McCarter and his bullet header gave Robinson no chance; the speed of the header leaving him stranded on his goal line.

The smile was back on Distillery’s faces on 43 minutes as a brilliant strike from a tight angle by David Wright found the Bloomfield top corner. It was a great way for Wright to celebrate his special day by scoring against his former teammates, the Bloomfield fans clearly saddened he had left the club by doing things like that.

The Whites best piece of play arrived on 60 minutes when a series of flicks and tricks found Stuart Thompson who was felled in the area. Up stepped Ally Wilson to smash his penalty into the net to make it 3-1 to the Whites, surely nothing could go wrong now.

On 68 minutes it was nearly 3-2 as another top class save by Robinson kept out a certain goal by Getty but then shortly after this Kingsberry almost found Withers but he could not connect with the teasing cross.

Tweedie could have written himself into the Distillery history books as the quickest substitute to score after coming on as Wilson found him only seconds after his arrival but his shot came to nothing.

The fighting spirit had not been lost by Bloomfield as a quick corner saw Mark Hanna flash his header across the box to find Glen Bowers. His shot was once again saved by the flying Robinson to tip it behind.

Robinson was then nearly beaten by a strike by Darren Shaw but he held it at the second attempt. The drama was not over as Bloomfield felt that they were denied a clear penalty as they appealed, in vain, for what seemed to be a push in the box on Glen Bowers.

The Whites rounded off a great day in front off goal as a ball was fired across the box by the lively Withers and was duly met by Mark Tweedie who smashed in past Harvey to seal the game and a place in the third round.

Team: Robinson, Morton, Thompson, Irwin, Nixon, McIlhagga, Browne, Upton, Wilson, Wright, Kingsbury. Subs: Lyons, Tweedie (for Wright) Whan, Withers (for Upton) McBride.
