Whites Supporters Club want to contact club legend’s family

LISBURN Whites Supporters’ Club are looking to contact the family of one of the club’s legendary players.

Olphert Stanfield, known as ‘Olphie’, who played for Distillery between 1886 and 1898.

He joined the club from Genoa and in the 1888/89 season he scored hat-tricks in four consecutive matches and collected medals in the Irish Cup and County Antrim Shield, scoring in both finals before going on to win a further eight trophies.

Despite being offered the chance to join First Division side Notts County, who, back then, were one of the top sides in England, he twice turned down a move despite being able to name his own terms.

He is the club’s most capped international player with 30 caps and 11 goals for Ireland, making his debut at the age of 17 years and 344 days old

As well as this he made scored 178 goals in 181 competitive appearances for the Whites along with 115 appearances and 62 goals in friendlies.

Olphie died on March 13 1952 at the age of 83 and was laid to rest in Dundonald Cemetery. His last know address was Wandsworth Crescent on the Lisburn Road. If anyone can provide information on Olphie’s family they are asked to please get in touch with Ged Irwin on 07730505190
