Workman on target in pre-season defeat

Larne suffered their second pre-season friendly defeat on Saturday when they went down 2-1 in an entertaining game at Derriaghy. The Reds played some good football but slack defending proved costly.

All three goals were quality strikes with Gary Workman’s equaliser the pick of the bunch.

The home side took the lead after 20 minutes. As the Larne defence backed off the ball fell to Andy Rosbotham and he drilled a left-foot shot from the edge of the box past Darren Gibbons.

Larne were back on level terms two minutes later when Workman curled a delightful right-footed free-kick over the wall and into the top left corner giving the keeper no chance.

Striker Paul Maguire made his return to the side in the second half and looked lively.

Derriaghy then scored what proved to be the winner after 55 minutes. Brian McClean’s cross-field pass was intercepted and quickly despatched to the front men. The ball was picked up by Aaron Baker who, despite being surrounded by defenders, managed to fire a right-foot shot past Gibbons.

Tonight (Thursday) Larne travel to Dixon Park to face Ballyclare before the much-anticipated clash with a fans’ side at Inver Park on Saturday. Manager Tommy Kincaid refused to comment on the match but confirmed he had some of the opposition players watched in the Derriaghy Social Club last Saturday.

LARNE: Gibbons, Devine, Lemon, Marsh, Moore, McClean, Workman, McFetridge, C. Todd, Berry, Simms. Subs: Maguire, Fletcher, Bell.
