Wylie and McNally give Colts win over Dungannon

Cookstown started the brighter of the two teams pushing forward and creating plenty of chances .

They were rewarded with two quick goals with Stewart Wylie and Ben McNally scoring one a peice .

Dungannon came into the game more , in the last 15 minutes of the first half and pulled a goal back.

Dungannon put the pressure on throughout the second half but the Cookstown defense and midfield worked hard and kept the shape to stop any attacks.

Cookstown did have some chances in the 2nd half but couldnt add a third.

U11 management was overjoyed by this result and praised coach David Millar for his input into this result.

A brilliant start for Cookstown Youth team with Peter Bell, Eunan O’Neill and Nathan Murray dominating the midfield

Dungannon young colts side proved to be impossible to break through their defence .

Terry Devlin and Bene Tereso had chances in the first half but it finished at half time 0 - 0 .

The second half saw Dungannon break through for a few chances but Eoghan Donnelly was solid in nets again.

Nathan Murray run the wing and crossed for Terry Devlin only too be stopped by a brilliant Dungannon keeeper.

The breakthrough came five minutes from the end when Peter Bell took the ball round two players only too lay it off for Terry Devlin who wrong footed the Dungannon keeper and score a great goal to make it 1-0

The management of Jonny Scott and Barry O’Rourke said that the team had proved their quality and worth and that their training was paying off.

Last Saturday the U12s powered through to the semi-final of the Lisburn League Shield after a superb team performance against Banbridge at Havelock Park.

From the first whistle the Cookstown sizzlers pressurized the Banbridge defence with Lee Glasgow shooting just wide in the fourth minute of the game.

A great bit of combination play between debutant Eoin Gallagher and Tiernan Mackle created the opening goal for Lee Glasgow on seven minutes.

Both Iarlaith Donaghy and Luke Patterson had good chances saved before Glasgow shot just wide with a left foot drive from the edge of the box. Luke Patterson then ghosted in from the back post to deliver a powerful header which was touched unto the post and cleared. A wonderful back heel from Joseph Donnelly created another great chance with Joel Dallas driving just wide.

Mackle also shot wide with the goal at his mercy before he inadvertently blocked a goal bound shot from Glasgow. Just before half time Iarlaith Donaghy made a superb last ditch tackle on the quick Banbridge striker as Cookstown remained ahead in a half they totally dominated in terms of possession and chances created.

Into the second half it was more of the same with Joel Dallas shooting wide with just the keeper to beat on 35 minutes. Joseph Donnelly also spurned a goal scoring opportunity from a similar position five minutes later.

Harry Wilson then had a good drive saved before Glasgow scored a wonder goal into the top left corner of the Banbridge net from an acute angle just inside the eighteen yard box. Co-man of the match Mackle then won the ball just inside his own half and drove at the Banbridge defence with pace, power and no little skill. His powerful run past three defenders was matched with a sublime finish in his new boots past the advancing keeper as he rounded off a great all round performance matched only by William Kenning in defence who was faultless throughout.

Goalkeeper Stephen Black made a superb save in the dying seconds. Debutant Eoin Gallagher showed some good movement and passing and hopefully will give the management team a few selection problems in the coming weeks as he develops within the team.

Glenavon had the edge in possession but Cookstown’s back four Marty Mccracken, Ryan Murphy, Robert Turkington And Kaelum Irvine were keeping a solid shape.

Tyler Anderson made a good save from a corner kick. Ryan McFarland could have had two goals but for heavy first touches.

When Nathan Connolly weaved past several players and was taken down in the box Sam Hardy missed the target from the penalty to let Glenavon off the hook.

Glenavon scored from a left sided cross in the early part of the second half. Cookstown stayed in contention with Brendan Davey working hard to block Glenavon’s attacking raids.

Cookstown ran out of attacking ideas late on and Glenavon scored three more goals to run out conclusive winners.

CYFC U14s made the short journey to the Meadowbank Sports Complex in Magherafelt , for their Derby game against the Sky Blues last Saturday.

The 14s were without coaches Stevie O’Hare and Mark Wilson and Player Stefan O’Hare, so Joint Manager Andy Kelly took the reins along with Son Drew , and lined the Team out with Ben Young in goals, a back four of Cameron Thom, Ryan Rocks, Mattie Kelly and Jamie McCrum.

The Midfield was made up of Conor Donnolly, Adam Keane, Ryan Dobson and Jack Dingley and the two marksmen up front were Stevie Arrell and Kyle Devlin.

The Cookstown lads started brightly with some great touches and with the help of a strong wind were unlucky not to take the lead on severel occasions with Arrell, Devlin and Dobson all coming close.

Cookstown went ahead when Arrell floated in a great corner which was met by McCrum whose feirce header was saved by the Keeper only for the ball to fall kindley for Dobson to poke home. Cookstown should have increased their lead but for some great defending from the Sky Blues who grabbed an equaliser on the stroke of Half-time after the Defence failed to clear their lines.

Against a strong wind CYFC knew they would have to be on their toes in the second half, and it wasnt long before the Sky Blues took adavantage of that wind and had a shot from the half way line which Young punched against the crossbar and agonisely hit him on the back of the head and into the net.

Cookstown never gave up and the Coaches made a couple of changes with Ronan Hughes coming on for Kelly and Cameron McMullan on for Dingley. Keane slotted into the back four which gave Hughes a chance to run at the Sky Blues defence. Dobson and Rocks were immense in the middle and Devlin and Arrell both came close but to no avail. Cookstown brought things level again when an Arrell free kick was saved by the Keeper only for the rebound to be hammered home by Rocks who couldnt hide his joy.

Luke McCrea came on for Donnolly and James McKee for Devlin and it was McKee who came close on severel occasions but as with previous games this season ,CYFC were hit with a sucker punch with ten minutes remaining when The Sky Blues scored what was to be the winning goal in what was a great game and a fantastic advert for Youth Football.

Apologies to Caleb Buchannon and Ciaran Monaghan who unfortunately didn’t get on but will be assured of a run out this coming Saturday.

Cookstown took the field with a changed line up with debutant S McMath filling in for the injured A Bell at centre half.

Things got off to a bad start and Cookstown found themselves 1-0 down after two and half minutes. With their backs against the wall Cookstown fought hard to get back into the match and a good move between J Glasgow, M Megarry, D Teague and J Harte put R McWhirter through to score the equaliser.

Half time arrived with the teams level at 1-1. A Stern team talk from G McGaw and T Megarry brought the team out fighting and in high spirit. With the wind at Limavady’s advantage they put it to good use and on 50 minutes scored to lead 2-1.

The management team made a few changes with another debutant J McGuigan replacing the very badly injured M Megarry in centre midfield. A Cookstown defence error gave away a silly free kick 20 yards out but C Reynolds matched the effort to make a wonderful save to keep Cookstown in the match.

D Martin and C McGovern then came on with 15 minutes to go and put in a good hard shift helping the Cookstown team to raise their game. With 4 minutes to go debutant J McGuigan made a great solo run 40 yards, struck the ball with venom with his left foot and hit the bottom corner of the net to earn a deserved equaliser for Cookstown.

The match finished all square at 2-2. Manager R Cummings thought this was a lucky escape and they didn’t deserve even a draw and not to take teams like this lightly but the boys spirits and hard work saw it through with the help of T Megarry and G McGaw.

Players and managers wish M Megarry a speedy recovery after his bad shoulder injury and J Glasgow will now step up to the mark as Team captain. Also Best Wishes to Adam Bell for a speedy recovery and hope he gets back soon. Thanks must go to the parents and supporters for supplying the refreshments on such a cold night. MOM S McMath
