YM lose unbeaten Drumahoe record

YMCA Ladies...0Belfast United...2

NEWLY promoted YMCA Ladies lost their 18 month unbeaten home record last Wednesday night after they lost to Northern Ireland Women soccer kingpins Belfast United, at Drumahoe, in the NIWFA Premier League.

United fielding seven Northern Ireland Senior international players started brightly and put YM under pressure but the YM defence of Laura Nicholas, Catherine McSheffrey, Chloe Archibald and Tasmin McCarter were outstanding and repelled everything that United put to them.

Kendra McMullan was causing the visitors defence concern with her mazy runs but on 30 minutes United almost scored when a rasping drive from the edge of the box which seemed destined for the top right hand corner was brilliantly tipped around the post by Kirsty Edis in the YM goal.

However, from the resultant corner the Belfast ladies took the lead when poor communication in the YM goalmouth led to the United striker nipping in between two defenders to smash the ball home.

In the second half YM pushed for the equaliser and the closest they came was when McMullan forced a good save from the visitors keeper from a free-kick.

Eddis produced another good save midway through the half to keep YM in the game and with ten minutes remaining YM pushed on seeking the equaliser and with only five minutes remaining United sealed the points with an excellent strike from the edge of the box.

This was an excellent performance from the very young YM side and the 2-0 scoreline was not a true reflection on the game.

The Drumahoe girls pushed their illustrious opponents throughout the whole match and competed with them all over the pitch and even the United management admitted that they were fortunate to collect full points.
