Zayed gutted with result

DERRY City striker Eamon Zayed admitted he would have swapped his first goal for his new club, for the three points, at Drogheda United, on Friday night.

The Libyan gave the Brandywell men the perfect start at Hunky Dorys Park, before Gareth McGlynn increased their lead, however two defensive mistakes allowed the home side to secure their first point of the season.

“It was nice to get the goal and to be fair I could have had another one, but the most important thing was the three points and I would have swapped my goal for the three points,” he said.

“Everyone is disappointed and I guess all we can do is pick ourselves up for our huge game against Shamrock Rovers.

“We threw away two points, we should have had the game wrapped up.

“We went in at half-time 1-0 up and we could have been further ahead at the break, then we got the second goal early in the second half and we should have pushed on and closed the game out, but silly mistakes at the back and that’s cost us.

“I’m disappointed because when we were 2-0 up I thought we were cruising to be fair; I couldn’t see them scoring at all, then they scored out of the blue and then to concede another straight after that it’s awful, it’s school boys errors.

“We just simply can’t be making those type of mistakes at any level; it doesn’t matter who you are playing against whether it’s Shamrock Rovers or Drogheda United you are going to get punished if you make the mistakes we did; it’s a young enough team so hopefully we can learn very, very quickly.”

The ex-Sporting Fingal man also believes that if experienced duo Eddie McCallion and Stewart Greacen had have been playing then they would have made a big difference.

“I think it’s fair to say we missed Stewart on Friday night, he has started off really, really well for us and if he was playing at Drogheda we wouldn’t have made those mistakes, so I think with him and obviously Eddie coming back for the Rovers game next week that will be huge for us.

“But no matter who’s playing we can’t be making those mistakes.”
