Four down, one to go in Winter League

FOUR rounds of the Fourball Winter League have been completed and there is only one more round to go.

After round five, the top two teams in each of the two sections will qualify for a final playoff.

SECTION ONE - Team 5 look certain to win section one. Their team is very strong indeed. In round four, their three top scores came from Paul McDonald (38), Hugh Dunne (33) and Dominic Quinn (33). Their running total is now 406 points and that is nine points ahead of the second placed team.

Team 2 remain in second place after scoring 101 points in round four. Roy Sipson was brilliant with 38 points, Shane Bell was admirable with 33 points and Colin Wilton was first-class with 30 points. Their running total is 397 points.

Teams 9 and 4 are still in with a chance of making the final shootout.

Team 9 have 393 points, only four behind the team in second place. Their three counting scores in round four came from Andrew Quinn (38), PJ Johnston (35) and Eugene Weir (30).

Team 4 are only five points adrift of the second team. They are on 392 points and they are well capable of hitting a big score in the final round. Gary McCartney (37), John McDowell (32) and Stephen Orr (30) shot the counting scores in round four.

It’s sure to be an exciting climax to this section.

SECTION TWO - Team 7 have led section two from week one. They are only two points ahead of Team 8 but, more importantly, they are 13 points ahead of third placed Team 6.

Team 7 have a total of 377 points and their three best scores in round four came from Brian Parkes (32), Bertie Shaw (30) and Gerry Blevins (28).

Team 8 are on 375 points and they look secure in second place. Their scores in round four were Ronnie Halliday (36), Merton McDowell (30), Danny O’Boyle (29) and Kenny Baines (29).

Team 6, on a score of 364, are third and probably too far behind. Colin McKinney (37) was the top scorer in section two in round four with 37 points. Albert Morrison scored 30 points while both Dennis Watt and Philip Mallon both scored 29 points.

THE TOP PLAYERS - Seven players in the Fourball Winter League have scored 30 points or better each round. The magnificent seven are Hugh Dunne (36, 34, 37,33), Stephen Orr (36, 35, 32, 31), Ronnie Halliday (33, 33, 31, 36), Sydney Pepper (30, 32, 34, 32), Dermot Dawson (35, 31, 31, 31), Albert Morrison (32, 31, 33, 30) and Colm McGreevey (31, 30, 31, 31).

Hugh Dunne, who is a winter league specialist, looks certain to be the player of the tournament.
