Fourteen man Ballymoney fall at the death to rampant Bangor

Ballymoney approached the game as underdogs, as Bangor recently reached the semi-final of the All Ireland Junior Cup beating one of the favourites for it.

The performance and intensity had to be greater than the team had shown all season for them to compete in the game, and that is what Ballymoney did.

They could’ve taken the lead, but missed a penalty early in the first half. Bangor were able to hold their nerve for their penalty and took a 3-0 lead.

Ballymoney had long spells of dominance in the Bangor 22, with the pack too aggressive. The frustrating area for the Toon was decision making. The forwards had the upper hand and should’ve played smarter in the red zones.

In the second half however we did chose the right option and took the lead 5-3, and was undoubted deserved. Bangor were on the ropes, but when Ballymoney went down to 14 men, they showed why they are one of the best Junior sides in Ireland when they clinched two tries with about 10 minutes to go.

Ballymoney were unable to cross their line again. The game ended 17-5.

“The guys have shown everyone that we have the ability to mix it with the top sides,” said Captain Chris Beverland, “but our consistency needs to carry on into the next run of games.

“I couldn’t have asked the guys to give anymore today, our effort was 100%. Our pack were outstanding ... and it would be difficult to pick out an individual. Ryan Clyde got a nasty facial injury from a boot, and we wish him well in recovery.

“We’ve a big game against Instonians this saturday at home, so all support would be much appreciated.”
