Fourths exact their revenge

SATURDAY saw South Fourths travelled to Mossley in the cup, yet again.

The Belfast men ran out 4-0 winners last time, so South’s Fouths were determined to make up for it.

With a full squad, South started brightly, enjoying prolonged periods of possession and dealing well with Mossley’s counter attacks.

The deadlock was broken when Trevor Wallace played a fantastic 50 yard pass through to Jonny McBride who took it into the D and slotted it between the keeper’s legs, therefore ending his six month goal drought.

The match continued in much the same fashion, with Mossley easing themselves into it a bit more, forcing South keeper Andy Cameron into a few fantastic saves.

South then won a short corner thanks to another excellent ball from the back by Trevor Wallace, which was well worked and resulted in a simple tap in for Gareth Campbell.

The locals went into the break with their two goal lead still intact.

South knew the next goal would be crucial. A third goal for the Fourths would all but end the match as a competition, however were they to concede it would fairly throw the cat amongst the pigeons.

So they tightened up at the back and restricted Mosley to very few chances. However, for all their effort they still gave away a short corner. But when the Mossley man took the short corner before the whistle went a free out was awarded to South, which was taken quickly by Andrew Smylie, to Gareth Campbell who ran 50 yards without being tackled, squared the ball around the keeper to Neil Wilson who stroked it into an empty net, a fantastic counter attacking goal that stamped South’s authority on the game.

The half continued with South creating chances at one end and shutting them out at the other end. The only other incident of note was when Jonny McPolin was hacked down from behind with a tree-chopping tackle that should’ve resulted in a green card.

When the final whistle blew, the score was 3-0 to South. We’d just like to extend our thanks to Mossley for providing two umpires as we did not have one with us.

As the tournament is pre-drawn South know they will now face North Down Sixths away on Wednesday night. A win in midweek places South in a semi-final on Saturday, again away so hopefully the Lisburn boys can get a positive result.
