Fourths get cup campaign off and running against ‘Hinch

Ballmoney IV got their McCambley Cup campaign off to a winning start with a comfortable victory over Ballynahinch.

The first half saw both teams play some open, entertaining rugby. The Ballymoney backs were keen to spread the ball wide and challenge their opponents defence line.

The Ballymoney centre partnership of James Celland and Benjy Van der Byl proving a real handful for the Ballynahinch defence.

The opening score of came after a number of good phases of play between the Ballymoney forwards and backs. A rolling maul deep inside the Ballynahinch 22 metre line saw the Ballymoney pack drive over the Hinch try line, team captain John Waide securing the opening points. James Cleland converted.

The second half kicked off with the home side keen to add to their advantage. A solid Ballymoney scrum saw fly half Davy Calvin reverse a pass back inside to the charging Aidy White who ghosted past three Hinch defenders and touched down beneath the posts for an excellent score. James Cleland again added the conversion.

The final score came again after a long period of sustained Ballymoney pressure. T Malcolmson adding his name to the score sheet with a fine try in the final minute.

Team manager Davy McHugh commented after the game. “That was a good performance. We again executed some clinical finishing today, Hinch gave a good account of themselves, however we rarely looked in any danger”.

Man of the match award goes to Alwyn Stevenson. The powerful second row forward led from the front, working tirelessly in the loose and open play.

The fourths now prepare for next weekend’s league fixture, away to Larne.
