Fourths lay siege to Derry

ON Saturday Ballymoney 4th XV travelled to play City of Derry 4's in a league game and recorded a resounding 40 – 0 victory to secure two more league points.

Ballymoney kicked off and immediately put the home team under pressure with some excellent play from both forwards and backs. The opening try came from an error by the home fullback when he failed to deal with the ball near his own line, his hesitation allowed Aidey White to nip in and touch down under the posts with J.Trainor adding the conversion.

If the first try was from a mistake the second was individual brilliance as Gawaine Foster took the ball from a ruck 40 yards out and proceeded to outstrip the initial cover before side stepping the next defender and finally powering through the next two to touch down near the posts. This try marks an unbelievable level of consistency, as this is Gawaine’s seventh try in as many games.

The next try came from an initial break from T.Hanna before chipping the ball over the last defender for the ball to bounce nicely into the waiting Eddie Murray’s hands with Jarvis adding the extras.

The boys from the Toon were now beginning to cut loose and Timmy Hanna added the 4th try soon afterwards as he powered his way over under the sticks.

The last try of the 1st half came after a strong run from John McFetridge who surged forward tying up two defenders before of loading to R.Millar who touched down to leave the halftime score at 35 -0

The 2nd half showed that Co Derry were not going to going roll over as they came at the visitors strongly using their big forwards to try and blast their way through.

However the ‘Money boys were not going to allow their defence to be breached as they continually met the attackers on the gain line and thwarted all the home sides efforts.

A number of try scoring opportunities were spurned as the 4’s returned to the front foot as they laid siege to the home line.

The final score after another surging run by the powerful No. 8 J. McFetridge who forced his way over wide out with two would be tacklers hanging from his back as he crossed the line.

Captain Waide was happy enough with this latest victory as it cements their position at the top of the league.
