After Holywood conceded the match the previous week, the Fourths were keen to be back in action.

Ulster Elks arrived late and with only nine players and the delay to the start of the game unsettled the local side who started nervously.

However, after 15 minutes, Hannah Nelson’s perseverance paid off when she was able to slot home after some sustained pressure in the attacking circle.

This was followed by some good attacking play by Ulster Elks putting Bann under pressure despite the disparity in numbers.

Andie Martin in goals was called upon to make a couple of fine saves and Emma Murphy in particular defended solidly to ensure Bann retained their lead.

Bann were always strong on the right flank with Karen McConville and Jessica Faulkner combining well to get the ball into the circle and eventually Hannah Neslon got her second goal with a great strike from the edge of the circle.

The half time score was 2-0 in Bann’s favour although the team recognised that the game was from over with a very determined Elks side not giving up.

Indeed, Elks started the second half very strongly, immediately putting the Bann defence under pressure and again some superb defending was required to keep them at bay.

Midway through the second half, Jessica Faulkner increased Bann’s lead following a great solo run and this effectively put the game out of Elks’ reach.

Elks continued to strive for a consolation goal and again Andie Martin was to the rescue with Lydia Waugh and Lynda McKinley also making some crucial tackles.

The final whistle secured 3 points for Bann.

However, Bann are well aware that the return game against a full strength Elks side will be a very different story.

Thanks to Jeanie Bell and Dave Morrison for umpiring the game.
