Foyle cause shock to book semi-final spot

Foyle & Londonderry College battled hard to over come Belfast Royal Academy 20-13, in Saturday’s Danske Bank Ulster Schools Bowl quater-final’s.

Coach David Barnett was thrilled with the victory. “We knew that if we produced a similar display as the Limavady game, then we were in with a chance of causing an upset.”

Foyle started the game strongly, dominating the first 20 minutes of the game, particularly up front.

Within the first 10 minutes of the game Foyle were rewarded a penalty for the hard work and Alex McDonnell slotted it over to make it 3-0 to the home side.

Five minutes later McDonnell made it 6-0 with another cooly struck penalty.

Almost immediately BRA gained possession and put the Foyle defence under pressure and for their hard work BRA were rewarded a penalty and there out half made it 6-3.

The visitors continued to put Foyle’s defence under pressure and BRA scored right on half-time to make the score 6-10 to the visitors at the break.

In the second half, Foyle increased the intensity of their game and dominated possession and territory.

On 55 minutes captain and the outstanding player on the pitch Patrick Leeson scored from the back of a scrum, converted by McDonnell to make score 13-10.

Then moments later BRA scored from a penalty to make it 13-13, however with the game entering the final ten minutes the home side won the tie.

Foyle scrum half Michael Rankin scored under the posts and McDonnell converted to make the final score 20-13 in the home side’s favour.

David Barnett’s side now face Lurgan at home in the semi-final on Saturday, February 22.
