Foyle cup gets to knock out stages

The Hughes Insurance Foyle Cup moved into the knock out stages.

Headlines were grabbed by Donegal Schoolboys Academy at Under 14 who qualified to the quarter finals at the expense of Glasgow Celtic - the Scottish side paid the price for an opening day defeat to Maiden City Academy.

However the Scottish Premier will be well represented in the quarter finals as Kilmarnock play St Oliver Plunkett and Hearts face Bohemians of Dublin. Tristar of Derry face Donegal Schoolboys and Foyle Harps play Inishowen Youth League in the other ties on Friday morning. At Under 16 Hull City and Everton America are the highlight names in a competitive lineup on Friday morning (11am).

Hull play Hillsborough Boys, Derry & District Meet Grosvenor Youth, Evertone America play Donegal Schoolboys with Inishowen completing the lineup against Limavady United. The Under 12 quarter finals also take place on Friday morning - tie of the round is Glentoran v Finn Harps. Other games include NECSL v Arklow Town, Ballymoor v Hearts and Limavady United v Lucan.

In the Ladies final at Drumahoe, Aisling McBride looked to have won the game for Lagan Harps when she struck with just 15 minutes remaining. Sion who had been on top for most of the game, looked to have run out of time until Louise mcfetterick equalised in the last 60 seconds to send the match into a penalty shootup.

Louise Brennan scored the winning penalty (5-3) for Sion Swifts after their goalkeeper Grace Quinn saved from Lagan Harp’s Lauren Harper.

At Under 13, hosts Derry & District defeated city rivals Institute 1-0 at Oakland to qualify for the Friday night final where they play Donegal Schoolboys who had a comfortable 5-2 win over Maiden City in the other game. Final is at 6pm on Friday at Institute’s Riverside stadium.

The Under 15 final will also see Donegal Schoolboys feature after their impressive 4-1 semi final victory over St Johnstone. Opponents on the night (7:30pm at Riverside Stadium) will be Draperstown Celtic who defetaed Trojans 2-0 on Thursday night.

The Under 19 final will see Scottish Premier League side Hibernian play Ballymena United after wins over Eircom League sides Finn Harps and Derry City respectively. The final is at 7pm on Friday at Ardmore.

Dungannon United Youth’s impressive run over the last two years at mini soccer continued. They defeated Limavady United comfortably in the quarter finals before a 2-2 draw in the semi final with Coleraine. A penalty win secured them a place with last year’s beaten finalists Hearts FC. The game will be at the Vale Centre in Greysteel at 4-15pm. In the Under 10 conmpetition, a new name name is guaranteed on the trophy as St Oliver Plunkett FC from Belfast defeated Ballymoney 2-0 and will meet Donegal side Kilmacrennan Celtic who defeated Limavady United 2-0 in the other semi final. The final on Friday is at St Columbs Park at 5-15pm on Friday.
