Foyle cycling season starts soon

FOLLOWING on from last year the Foyle Cycling Club will be continuing their sportive’s and club racing.

As their membership has now doubled in two years and fast approaching 140, with 25 per cent of these female, the events are becoming very popular and prove to be good challenges and goal setters for many of the cyclists new and old within the club.

The Club will be running our flagship annual event the ‘Inishowen 100’, this attracts cyclists from all over the world to come and tackle the mammoth task of climbing some of Inishowen’s toughest climbs (Mamore Gap known to be one if not the toughest in Ireland) as well as seeing some of the most beautiful scenery the north west of Ireland has to offer.

Last year the club created a three Day Race event for our members; this along with the second annual Campsie Criterium proved to be as popular as our sportive’s so again the club has decided to include this into the 2013 Calendar. This year the race committee have out done themselves and added more excitement to the race events.

Also this year the the club will play a major part in the City of Culture 2013 Cycle week events.

The Maiden City Criterium, organised by the Foyle Cycle Club, a criterium or ‘crit’ is an intense road race on closed-off city streets. Both speeds and adrenaline will be high as riders must battle not only each other but the steep hills and narrow streets of the historic walled city for cash prizes and the honour of being crowned Derry’s fastest cyclist.

The Crit will attract some of the best cyclists from all over Ireland and further a field. North West Cross-Border Sportive, novice and experienced cyclists alike are encouraged to take up the challenge of a race taking in the counties of Derry~Londonderry, Tyrone and Donegal.
Foyle Cycling Club will help organise the event along with other local clubs The Four Masters, Strabane and Lifford Cycle Club this will be a sponsored charity event in aid of Foyle Hospice and Sustrans. Details of exact route and times to follow.

The club will host it’s first Open Cycling Ireland Race this will attract cycling clubs from all over the island to come and compete for cycling Ireland points.

Club runs operating as normal, 9am Saturday’s and Sunday’s leaving from Templemore Sports Complex. Due to popular demand the club will be starting a B run every Sunday at 10am, this will start on Sunday, February 24th and is aimed at cyclists that are new to the sport and want to increase their fitness and cycling experience levels.
